Sunmud, a reef-safe sunscreen brand founded in Ocean Beach, is now on shelves at Hansen Surfboards in Encinitas.

The brand, launched in 2023 by CEO Maricruz Carrillo and co-founders Charles Biset and Miles Lee, has grown to more than 100 retailers nationwide and is tracking toward $250,000 in revenue by the end of 2026, the San Diego Business Journal reported Friday, Sept. 11.

Carrillo told the Business Journal she started searching for ocean-friendly sunscreen about 12 years ago. "The only thing I could find back then … was pure zinc, and it felt like diaper rash cream," she said.

That search led to Sunmud's formula, which uses clay, non-nano zinc oxide and seed oils in plastic-free aluminum tins.

Hansen Surfboards, at 1105 S. Coast Hwy 101, has operated across the street from Swami's for 65 years. The family-owned shop is one of San Diego County's longest-running surf retailers.

Carrillo told the Business Journal she is in talks with larger natural retail chains, though she did not name them.
