Rancho Coastal Humane Society in Encinitas took in seven cats and two dogs from Kauai after Hurricane Lowell displaced pets across the island more than 2,500 miles away.

The nine arrivals bring the shelter's total to more than 100 animals, including dogs, cats and bunnies, according to CBS 8, which reported on the transfer. The shelter is urging Encinitas-area residents to adopt or donate supplies to ease overcrowding.

Judi Sanzo, president and CEO of Rancho Coastal Humane Society, said taking the Kauai animals freed up kennel space on the island for pets whose owners may be looking for them.

"These animals were already in the shelter before the hurricane hit, freeing up the kennel for the owners who may be looking for them," Sanzo said, according to CBS 8.

One new face stands out. Hibiscus, a lab mix, is adapting well and ready for adoption, the shelter said.

Hurricane Lowell made landfall on Kauai late Sept. 7, bringing torrential rain and destructive winds. The storm crippled the island's electrical grid, leaving more than 90 percent of Kauai without power, according to the Hawaiʻi National Guard. Thousands of downed trees and utility poles choked main roadways, and the power loss degraded water pumping and treatment facilities. A federal Major Disaster Declaration was approved Oct. 7, according to the County of Kauaʻi.

CBS 8 reported that other area shelters are also operating at full capacity. Rancho Coastal staff encouraged the community to consider adoption or to donate towels, blankets and toys. The shelter also accepts foster volunteers.
