Trader Joe's will open a second Encinitas location at 1590 Leucadia Blvd., filling a space the outdoor retailer REI vacated when it moved to Carlsbad.

The Monrovia-based grocery chain confirmed plans for the new store, as first reported by the San Diego Union-Tribune on July 13. Patch reported Tuesday, Sept. 1 that the Encinitas location is part of a broader San Diego County expansion for the chain.

The 1590 Leucadia Blvd. address sits near the Forum Carlsbad, a 265,000-square-foot open-air shopping center accessible off Interstate 5 and Leucadia Boulevard. As of Thursday, Sept. 3, the Forum Carlsbad's online store directory does not list Trader Joe's as a tenant, and the chain's own locations page for Encinitas still shows only its existing store at 115 N. El Camino Real.

That El Camino Real location, inside the Encinitas Village shopping center, is described by commercial real estate firm TRC as one of the most successful Trader Joe's in San Diego County.

No opening date has been set.

A company representative told the Union-Tribune in July that "coming soon" stores tend to appear on the Trader Joe's website "three to six months before they open." The Encinitas location had not appeared on that list as of Thursday, Sept. 3.

The Encinitas and Clairemont stores will bring the county's Trader Joe's total to 20, according to the Union-Tribune. A third new store is planned in San Marcos near Cal State San Marcos, according to Patch. The Clairemont location, at 3962 Clairemont Mesa Blvd., is already under construction and will be store No. 299 in the chain.

No building permits or city planning filings for the Leucadia Boulevard store have surfaced in Encinitas public records. The store also has not yet appeared on the Trader Joe's "Opening Soon" page, which the company uses to signal locations nearing their debut.
