Trader Joe's plans to open a new store at 1590 Leucadia Blvd. in Encinitas, the grocery chain confirmed as part of a nationwide expansion announced in October.

The Leucadia Boulevard location is one of 28 new stores the company plans to open across 15 states, CBS8 reported. Three of those stores are in California, including a second San Diego County location in the Clairemont neighborhood of San Diego.

The address places the store in a shopping center on Leucadia Boulevard. Patch reported in September that the site is in the Forum Carlsbad shopping center.

Trader Joe's has not announced an opening date. The company told Nexstar that stores on its "Opening Soon" list typically open three to six months after the online announcement, the New York Post reported.

A Trader Joe's spokesperson said in a release that the company is "actively looking at hundreds of neighborhoods across the country as we hope to open more new neighborhood stores each year," according to CBS8.

The chain picks new locations based on population density, site access, traffic patterns and parking, marketing executives Tara Miller and Matthew Sloan said in a 2024 episode of the Inside Trader Joe's podcast, according to a transcript cited by Patch.

The new San Diego County locations would bring the county's total to approximately 20 Trader Joe's stores, Patch reported in September. The chain also announced a third county store planned for San Marcos as part of the North City mixed-use development near California State University San Marcos.

The Monrovia-based company opened 34 stores in 2024 and 43 in 2025, the New York Post reported. It also opened new locations in Anaheim Hills and West Jordan, Utah, in October, according to CBS8.

Residents can track the Encinitas store's status on the Trader Joe's website under its "Opening Soon" listings.
