Micah Jan Mattson, a 47-year-old Encinitas native, was found dead Aug. 31 in Lucerne Valley in San Bernardino County.

Mattson grew up near Moonlight Beach and rode for Zero Skateboards. He played guitar in the indie punk band Kut U Up, which toured with Blink-182 and Green Day in 2002. He also worked as an Amtrak conductor.

The Coast News reported that Mattson was last seen Aug. 21 at Mojave Narrows Regional Park. A missing-person report was filed with the San Diego Police Department on Aug. 26. His body was found near High Road and Del Oro Road, about 150 yards from his vehicle, according to San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department spokesperson Gloria Orejel, who spoke to The Coast News.

The cause and manner of death are pending.

Mattson attended San Dieguito High School, where he met future Kut U Up bandmates Chris Coté and Brendan Raasch. He was also credited with helping launch the musical careers of his younger twin brothers, Jared and Jonathan Mattson of the Mattson Two.

"He just had a way of making everybody that he met feel special," Coté told The Coast News.

A father of two sons, Mattson is survived by his family. A GoFundMe campaign launched Sept. 1 to help cover funeral expenses, household bills and care for his children. The Coast News has the full tribute to Mattson's life.
