Coastal Roots Farm will open its sukkah to the LGBTQ+ community and allies on Wednesday, Sept. 30, for an evening of food, drink and storytelling tied to the Jewish harvest holiday of Sukkot.
The event, called "Pride in the Sukkah," runs from 6 to 8 p.m. at the nonprofit farm at 441 Saxony Road in Encinitas. The farm stewards 17 acres on the 67-acre Leichtag Commons property and has hosted the gathering annually since 2024, according to its event page.
Megan Freeman, the farm's education manager, will lead the evening alongside Hanz Enyeart, a San Diego-based queer historian and Jewish educator. Enyeart lives in Hillcrest and has written for Rage Monthly magazine. At prior editions of the event, he shared stories of little-known queer Jewish history-makers, according to a North County Philanthropy Council listing.
Sukkot, sometimes called "the season of our joy," is one of the most communal holidays on the Jewish calendar. A sukkah is a temporary outdoor structure built for the holiday. The walls stay open. The farm said in its event listing that the open design is meant to make everyone feel welcome.
The evening will include festive food and drink along with what the farm calls Earth Based Judaism learning, connecting the harvest holiday to sustainable agriculture.
In past years, the event carried a suggested donation of $18 per person, with proceeds supporting the farm's community and sustainability programs. The 2026 listing did not specify a ticket price. Residents can visit coastalrootsfarm.org for registration details.
